Obama to Sign Executive Order in Private

There was plenty of hoopla in the East Room of the White House on Tuesday when President Obama signed the health care bill into law. But when Mr. Obama signs an executive order that secured the votes of some anti-abortion Democrats, he will do so in private.

The White House announced Tuesday evening that Mr. Obama would sign the order — which it said reaffirms the health bill’s “consistency with longstanding restrictions on the use of federal funds for abortion” — in the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon.

The order, negotiated Sunday afternoon as the House was entering the final stages of debate on the health care bill, bars the government from spending federal money to pay for abortions through plans offered on the insurance exchanges created under the measure. The deal swayed about a half-dozen anti-abortion Democrats, led by Representative Bart Stupak of Michigan, to support the bill, assuring its passage.

Wednesday’s Oval Office signing will be attended by Mr. Stupak and 12 of his Democratic House colleagues, the White House said. Senator Bob Casey, the Pennsylvania Democrat who also opposes abortion and had authored compromise language, will also attend.

For Mr. Stupak, it is probably a good thing that Wednesday’s signing is in private. He is being hammered by both the right and the left for bringing along the votes that, in the end, helped turn Mr. Obama’s health care overhaul into law. Feminists are trying to drive him from office, and some Republicans are asserting that he traded his vote for airport grants in his district — a contention that he has dismissed as ”absurd.”

Can't win 'em all? SMH.
