Many onlookers in the Old Port were happy to have their camera phones on hand yesterday as some brave ladies of Portland walked topless through the streets. Curious as to where the police were during this march? They were there, making sure everyone was safe during this outrageous yet legal demonstration. That's right, legal. Nudity is illegal in Maine only if genitals are displayed.
Ty McDowell, who organized the march, said she was "enraged" by the turnout of men attracted to the demonstration. The purpose, she said, was for society to have the same reaction to a woman walking around topless as it does to men without shirts on.
In time, people should become desensitized to topless women in public, but considering this isn't exactly normal for the town of Portland, the "ogling" should be expected. What do you think?
