i really hate when people Spout knowledge as historical fact without citing sources. Whether they are bloggers or governors.
And Due to recent posts about the confederacy from the Gov of Virginia and Mississippi, various bloggers, and even the Sons of Confederate Veterans, i thought i'd grab some primary sources and throw some facts into an argument that has been largely based on personal opinion.
The Civil war was primarily about slavery, and the right of the south to hold slaves. The states right issues was an issue, but the right they were fighting about was the right to hold SLAVES.
“Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.” Alexander Stevens Vice President of the CSA. (from his CORNER STONE speech where he talks about slavery 11 times)
Below are the Declarations of Secession for Texas, Georgia, Mississippi and South Carolina. In each of the declarations slavery is implicitly mentioned, and the perceived lack of slavery under a Lincoln Administration and the anger towards the north for not enforcing the slave fugitive act are all cited as reason of succession, in fact Texas mentions the word slave or slavery 22 times. Mississippi waits until…the second paragraph to state “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. “

I understand that the southern half of the United States doesn’t want to think of their grandparents or great-grand parents or great-great grandparents as racists, or traitorous, and to be sure, not all were, but they state why they want to leave the Union in plain language.
So can we please put to rest the romantic, yet inaccurate idea that the south fought against higher taxes, or against an over reaching federal government, or for states’ rights (without the explanation that slavery was the said right they were fighting for) Lincoln and the Republicans won the election, the south was afraid they were going to bar slavery, and they in turn seceded from the union…secession being an act of treason and rebellion( least we forget the the Supreme Court declared secession unconstitutional in 1869 TEXAS vs WHITE) And then went on to publish in their articles of secession slavery as one of their main reasons for leaving…
Please can we have no more #HistoryFAIL
