Eric Cantor Tries "First Come, First Served" with FEMA while America Drowns.

Eric Cantor Pressed FEMA About Aid For His District As Agency Struggled For Funding

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials have been busy convincing Congress to quickly fill its emergency aid coffers, as the agency finds its funds drained by the natural disasters that have hit the country in recent months. The insistence, led by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), that Congress should cut spending elsewhere to offset disaster relief funding, led to a partisan standoff and nearly shut down the government.

On Friday, however, FEMA officials found themselves busy answering to Cantor for another reason: He had requested a conference call to get updates on the disbursement of aid requested by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) for his district, which was affected by the Aug. 23 East Coast earthquake.

According to a read-out of the call from Cantor's office, as reported by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, "FEMA said they have received the Governor's request and sent it to the White House for a decision but could not provide any specific information on timing. Even when asked for an estimate based on past applications they were unable to do so."

A FEMA spokesperson confirmed that the call happened on Friday, and said Cantor's office had requested it on Sept. 22.

Cantor also called Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, "asking for additional information and a better sense of timing," according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Napolitano's office declined to comment.

Jesse Ferguson, spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), quickly criticized Cantor for looking for FEMA aid while the agency was struggling to stay afloat during the congressional funding standoff.

"The only thing worse than Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor's outrageous plan to hold disaster relief hostage to his push for radical cuts in job creation is his brazen hypocrisy in trying to convince his constituents back home that he stood with them in the first place," said Ferguson.

"Perhaps the DCCC should be more concerned with the fact that Leader Pelosi, Chairman [Steve] Israel, and all but five House Democrats voted against $3 billion in aid for FEMA, including over $1 billion in immediate emergency aid," responded Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring.
"That is more than Leader [Harry] Reid and Senate passed last evening. The purpose of the call was solely to keep local officials informed on
the timeline and process for determination by President Obama and Secretary Napolitano as to whether federal disaster aid will be granted. That is, you know, his job as a Congressman."

In July, congressional leaders from both parties agreed to spend $1.043 trillion to keep the government running while the super committee worked on plans to cut the deficit.

But that plan went off the tracks when mounting natural disasters stressed the FEMA budget; rather than simply pass a White House request for $500 million in emergency spending, Cantor said something else would have to be cut first.

The vast majority of House Democrats did vote against the GOP proposal for FEMA aid, because it contained those proposed offsets.

Tensions were eased when FEMA announced on Monday that it had enough funds to sustain itself through the end of the week, relieving Congress from immediately having to pass an extra $1 billion for FEMA.

Congressional leaders were eventually able to agree to a deal to keep the government running until Nov. 18. Beginning Saturday and until that date, FEMA has a remaining $2.65 billion to spend. The Senate passed the agreement in a 79-12 vote on Monday, and the House is expected to take it up next week.

I have friends waiting on FEMA funding to get the bridge to their house repaired, otherwise they're going to have to find a new place to live for the winter, as there will be no way to deliver oil to them for heating. I'm so fucking pissed about this whole situation.
amarettosunset 27th-Sep-2011 11:31 pm (UTC)
Seriously, fuck the people in VA-7 who have saddled the rest of the country with this douche.
amarettosunset 27th-Sep-2011 11:40 pm (UTC)
Should clarify: only talking about the VA-7 residents who continue to vote for this scum-sucking twatwaffle. Not the ones with reading comprehension and common sense.

I thought he was a smarmy little prick before all of this. Now, he's just plain evil. I don't know anybody here who voted for the guy, that'd be a different part of the district than little old Culpeper. Our district hasn't had a Democratic rep since 1971 and George Allen came out of this district, too, so the chances of him getting voted out look grim.

The area I live in loves Cantor. I would be very surprised if he lost an election.
evildevil 28th-Sep-2011 03:28 am (UTC)
of course they love him. He is fighting that evil mooslim kenyan socialist!
moropus 29th-Sep-2011 12:24 am (UTC)
But they should go to the back of the line for any Federal funds of any kind since he's against "hand outs." They elected him how many times? They found no other candidate to run against him and defeat him yet.

He shut down our government twice this year, leaving several people I know, including me wondering how we would survive, because of SS, SSI, other kinds of disability, other kinds of retirement, military retirements, regular military pay, random federal employees and so forth.

He's doing the typical Washington thing now. No handouts for any areas except mine, even though I waged war on them and people who get any kind of checks from the government.

Cantor is waging war on retirees. I am one. I am also disabled. My DH is disabled. My mom is on SS and another federal retirement plan. She has 2 kinds of cancer. I have friends in the military who did not know how they were going to feed their kids or have gas to go to work, or keep their cars from being repossessed. Many car loan companies will repossess if you miss one payment. People who are already in a high stress job don't need that 2-3 times a year. If you are in Iraq, how do you talk a guy in Texas out of repoing your car? Or try to hide it so he can't find it?

Unemployment is so bad we can't even get part time jobs when he does this. The man has to go.

This VA-7 resident thanks you for your clarification and apologizes on behalf of her district's idiot constituents. :(

Rosh Hashana in United States
What do people do?

Many Jewish Americans observe Rosh Hashanah, known as the New Year in the Jewish calendar, for two days, while others celebrate the event for one day. It is a time of family gatherings, special meals and sweet foods. Many Jewish people celebrate Rosh Hashana by eating challah bread and apples dipped in honey.

Unlike the secular New Year in the Gregorian calendar (January 1), Rosh Hashana is a time of judgment and remembrance, on which God reviews and judges a person's deeds in the past year. It is a time of prayer and penitence. All debts from the past year are supposed to be settled before Rosh Hashana. Many Jewish people in the United States seek forgiveness from friends and family prior to this event.

Some Jewish people perform the tashlikh. This is the custom of reciting prayers near naturally flowing water, such as a stream or river, and symbolically throwing one’s sins away in the form of small pieces of bread or other food. Many Jewish people perform tashlikh from places such as the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges in New York. Some people may use a fish pond or mikveh (ritual bath) if there is no local river or stream.

People of Jewish faith may take the day off work or organize time off during this time of the year, to observe the belief that no work is permitted on Rosh Hashanah. Much of the day is spent in synagogue, where the regular daily liturgy is expanded. The story of Abraham is read in synagogues and the shofar (ram’s horn) serves as a reminder that God allowed Abraham to sacrifice a ram instead of Abraham’s son, Isaac. The shofar is blown like a trumpet in the synagogue during this time of the year.
Good luck with Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) next month.

now this is an interesting question. For all we know Cantor actually believes that he hasn't done anything wrong. For all we know he doesn't have a conscience to begin with. I mean, some people are like that...
mindrtist Re: Happy New Year asshole28th-Sep-2011 04:57 am (UTC)
Anything's possible, but I think I can see the wheels turning in his pathetic little head. He should remember that the same people you step on trying 2 get up the ladder are the same people who are going 2 let you fall straight down upon your descent. He will eventually throw Boehner under the bus and out the other side, saying that he can't keep the Republican House members in line with all the Tea Party shenanigans.

one_hoopy_frood 27th-Sep-2011 11:52 pm (UTC)
I can't deal with reading this while my community is working so hard to get through its second major "100 year flood" in 5 years. The game he's playing with people's livelihoods is despicable.
jasonbeast 28th-Sep-2011 12:00 am (UTC)
I desperately want the Democratic party to field someone who can defeat this dick when his current term is up. Unfortunately, there's a lot of really wealthy people in his district who think he's doing a fine job.

*insert standard Virginia resident's apology for inflicting this douche on the rest of the country*

Grrrrrrr. I'm in VA-1, so I can't do much about Cantor...I'm stuck with Rob Wittman. At least he isn't the colossal douche that Cantor is.

This man evolves to a new level of dickery every day.

That is, you know, his job as a Congressman."

Oh, fuck off, Brad Dayspring.
