ONTD Political

Moderator Elections: Your Candidates

7:16 pm - 10/19/2011
Candidates should feel free to campaign in the form of "posters", gifs, icons, and the like (just don't spam).

Voting will open this Friday at 12:00am EST and close at 11:59pm EST. You will be able to change your vote up until the close of the poll. The post will likely be friends-only, so be sure to log in.

We do not currently know how many moderators we will be accepting - therefore, voters, every vote counts.

If any member would like to question a candidate about their qualifications, history with ontd_political, and/or why the candidate should be elected, please do so in this post - while placing their username in the subject field of the comment. Candidates are not obligated to respond, but it is encouraged.

I love being a bad cop! And macros. I also love macros.

I'm an Argentinean/Australian dual citizen (emigrated to Australia with my family as a kid) but technically an expat currently living in England. I'm active in the comm, often at night US time. I'm not what you'd call "conservative", but still probably a bit less dyed-in-the-wool liberal than a lot of people here - I married a soldier, I have a cop in the family, etc etc etc. Call me a pragmatic bitch if a label must be given.

Also? I'm a chef, and therefore an ace cook. FREE MACARONS FOR ALL.

hi, i'm applying to be a mod because even though i may not be as active a commenter as some others, i do have a great interest in this community and i read it consistently, trying to make posts and paying attention to the kinds of discussions that go on. i've been a member for a long time, almost since this community's creation, and it's the one i've stuck to the longest throughout my time on livejournal. i do have modding experience, and my modding style has always been firm but fair and reasonable. i also do best working in teams where there is frequent communication and cooperation. i'm not necessarily "non-liberal" as you put it, but i'm not entirely attached to the behaviors and ideologies that permeate liberal politics in america. i try and keep an open mind while always paying attention to discussion and context. i study political science, and while i am american, i do have the perspective of being a child of immigrants, and being part of a diaspora. as far as availability, i'm in the eastern time zone, but i do have a nocturnal streak and quite a bit of free time. i realize some of my livejournal affiliations may put me at a disadvantage but i honestly do have a vested interest in this community and its welfare, and i think i could be a great addition to the mod team.

I know, I know… a US-born, Socialist-leaning, atheist-Catholic liberal WOC isn’t exactly the answer for diversity around here but despite being part of the “community norm”, I have a lot of ideas that I think could increase membership, activity, and discussion within posted articles and comm-sponsored posts.

I’ve modded communities in the past (Disney and entertainment-related, mostly) so the stress and drama of dealing with Bonafide Internet Experts(TM) won’t be anything new or surprising for me.

In terms of what you guys are looking for, I’m a total night owl with constant access to a computer (between school and home... and of course, if there's no computer available there's always my phone...), and from a time zone that’s at least a few hours behind everyone else on the planet so I can hang around late night discussion/party posts.

I'm an active member here (too much sometimes, lol) and I've been here damn near since the beginning. I've also been a member of the mothership since their wee beginnings so I'm quite LJ-savvy.

Personally though... I am liberal. WOC. Natural-haired. Loves video games. Pro-pot legalization. Rabid Planned Parenthood supporter (JUST ASK ME ALL ABOUT IT!!!). Owns hundreds, maybe thousands, of books. Speaks in hyperbole. Is doing Nanowrimo this year. Leads Sparta.

All in all, I'm quite positive that I'll be able to handle the responsibility that comes with being a mod. Thank you for your consideration, and I hope I make it through because I have amazing ideas and I'm DYING to make campaign posters!

I am applying for a mod position under the categories "active members" and "night owls." I am currently the mod for coffeepartyusa here on LiveJournal, the coffeepartyusa community on Dreamwidth, and, along with unusualmusic, the politics community on Dreamwidth. I'm also the editor-in-chief and administrator of Overnight News Digest on Daily Kos and the administrator of the Coffee Party community on Daily Kos as well. I currently consider myself a liberal, but I'm an officer in a nonpartisan political organization (Coffee Party USA) and I was a Republican for 22 years, considering myself a moderate for most of that time. Also, I'm probably among the oldest applicants at 52. I'm also a guy. You want a different perspective from the current crop of mods? I think I probably have one.

Hi folks, I am amaterasu_no_ki and I am applying to be a moderator for ONTD_P. I'm a 25-year-old PhD student in health psychology, African American, and a bisexual woman.

I would be a great moderator for this community. I'm very active; this community is like my news source with the bonus of some very awesome people. I've learned a lot here, including from people who have differing political interests and beliefs from mine. I can remain level-headed in an argument, and use SCIENCE, evidenced by the amount of people who have either thanked me for explaining something to them (despite being a member of the offended group) and the other group of people who are like "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU WERE SO *CALM*." I also would be a good moderator because I LOVE this community and I want it to continue to grow in positive ways. I'd use my position as a moderator to encourage that growth - especially in non-expected directions (more conservatives, more libertarians, more folks not from the U.S.) I will stan for ontd_p! I'm not tolerant of bigoted or hateful opinions but I'm also a fan of education and, in extreme cases, eyerolling.

Unfortunately, I'm not non-liberal or international: I live in the U.S. and I do consider myself liberal. I have strong international interests, and I always try to at least read the international posts because I don't want to be ignorant of what's going on outside of my own country. However, I am definitely a night-owl, evidenced by the fact that I consider 12:45 am on Tuesday morning as "Monday night." Peak Internetting times for me are from about 7 pm to 2-3 am. On the weekends, that can easily extend into 5 am.

I'm not a non-liberal or international, but I am a night owl. I've also learned how not to be a jerk, mostly, over the years. (Mediocre recommendations? Yeah, I should be running for President!) XD

I'm pretty decent for the 'why-won't-this-work' questions.

My name is Corbin and I want to nominate myself for a mod position.

I am 25 and I was raised very hard core right as a child however I am primarily a socialist with centric leanings. I am heavy supporter of social justice and I have been a disability activist for about 5 years. I am person that loves to be educated and I want to be fair and respectful to people's points of view. However I will not hesitate to be firm with people when they disrespect others. I am always learning and I want to help out with my friends and community.

That's why I want to be a mod.

If you applied past the deadline your application was not considered. However, there may be elections again in the future, so please do not be discouraged.

1-What topics would you like to see more/less of in the comm?

2-If you could be any superhero who would it be and why?

With 1, I don't think you're going to get much of an improvement. I used to post stuff on environmental matters and got hardly any replies. So eventually I gave up - why should I bother if obviously nobody cares in this community? Was my thoughts.

So I assume it's the same with non-western news topics.

It should still be here. I know as a non American (and to a certain extent non-Westerner - some South Americans are somewhat confused about this!) it annoys me a bit to see the gap where discussion should be.

GUH! I am with you on the environmental thing. I feel like we are the only commenters sometimes. :/

Related to that, though I don't know you I will nonetheless solicit your opinion. Should I start a tumblr/wordpress blog about environmental stuff or clog up my personal LJ and subject my flist to my rantings?

re: 1
it sure would be nice if people would tag them correctly!
poetic_pixie_13 Re: serious and silly questions for the candidates20th-Oct-2011 04:32 pm (UTC)
admittedly i don't know a lot about superheroes

UMMMMMMMMMMMMM. This is a very Serious Issue and I am shocked you are not up to speed about it.
koken23 Re: serious and silly questions for the candidates20th-Oct-2011 12:23 am (UTC)
I'd love to see more of a global focus. American news is fascinating, and it affects the world...but we do get a lot of it, and it would be nice to have some balance.

I don't want to be superhero. You don't need superpowers to make the world a little better, and I like being me.

1. Articles on women's health and psychological disorders. Not just depressing stuff, but I think informational posts could be use to a lot of people, especially those who don't know where to start their search.

2. Storm. I have a lot of people I'd like to spontaneously strike with lightning.

God, you've already got my vote.
chaya Re: serious and silly questions for the candidates20th-Oct-2011 01:10 am (UTC)
1) I also want to see more psych-based stuff. I also want to push the 'good news' stuff on a certain (random) day of the week because if we're taking this comm seriously, a lot of the posts we have will be in-depth and depressing and sometimes that needs to be mitigated with corgis.

2) Can I be Gambit? Hyperdexterity and explosions and cool eyes ftw.
roseofjuly Re: serious and silly questions for the candidates20th-Oct-2011 03:37 am (UTC)
I was also going to say a more international/global focus, because those posts are woefully undercommented on. I can see why people don't post them as much. I also would like to see more good news (of course that's dependent upon what happened that day!) and more discussion posts that aren't simply centered around a news story. So someone asks a question about some political issue and we debate and banter and get our juices flowing. Even though I feel like many people on this board have more left-leaning political ideas, we're not a hive mind and think differently on much.

I always answer this question with Emma Frost. I think she's a BAMF; she got to be both a villain and a heroine (which is amazing because I CAN NEVER DECIDE), and her powers are cool - well-controlled telepathy. And she has sparkling dry wit, which is also pretty cool.

I'm reading Grant Morrison's New X Men series right now and Emma Frost is amazing in it.

On the serious side, more economics news. the_recession can't have all the fun. Speaking of fun, more "putting the 'oh no the didn't' into ontd_p.

Would Spider Jerusalem count? I like the idea of being a badass cyberpunk journalist.
