Rick Santorum Drops Out: GOP Presidential Candidate Suspends 2012 Campaign

2:13 pm - 04/10/2012
In a surprise decision Tuesday, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) will announce that he is suspending his presidential campaign, The Huffington Post's Jon Ward has learned and several other outlets have reported.

The Pennsylvania Republican had taken a break from the campaign trail for several days to tend to his ailing daughter, Bella. He had pledged to continue campaigning through the upcoming Pennsylvania primary. But the combination of his daughter's sickness and recent poll numbers showing him possibly losing his home state apparently prompted the early departure.

The announcement is expected to come during an address in Gettysburg, Penn. According to Yahoo! News, Santorum called Mitt Romney earlier in the day to inform him of his decision to suspend his campaign.

Santorum's decision removes any lingering doubt that Romney will end up the Republican presidential nominee. The former Massachusetts Governor held a seemingly insurmountable delegate lead prior to Santorum's departure, though his campaign was planning on spending between one and two million dollars against Santorum in Pennsylvania.

Yes, I noticed this too. I was like, "Good god, poor girl." She must have been trained at birth in order to keep up the appearance.

Lol, "Take back the White House".

Shut up, Lord.

Am I the only one NOT happy? The longer he stayed in, the longer the Republicans were busy trying to take each other down rather then going after Obama.

Newt is still there... with his two(?) states won. He's sticking around until Romney offers him a yummy donut (Veep or some cabinet position where he can still try and hawk his books)

Ron Paul will stay in because why the hell not? How late did he drop out back in 08?

No, I'm not happy either. Santorum was totally unelectable, and because of that, I felt like he was way worse for the Repubs than he was for us.

My dad's going to be pissed about this. He was so hoping Santorum would win the nomination so that Obama would have an easy shot at reelection.

I certainly hope his daughter is going to be okay.

And now, to the dancing.

Pretty much my thoughts.

Yeah, so sad :( I feel like no one survives too long with this disease. As much as I despise Santorum's politics, I really hope everything in terms of his daughter is ok. Can't imagine having to go through that.

Very happy he's gone, but is it really that surprising? After his daughter was re-admitted to the hospital I thought for sure there'd be speculation that he'd drop out.

The only thing I'm not happy about is that the GOP has a habit of nominating the runner-up from the last cycle, and now Santorum is in runner-up status. Gingrich and Paul don't even come close. We may end up seeing him again in 2016.

I did too, and honestly, I hoped he would - for his daughter's sake.

This is going to be a fun year. We have the Olympics, and the elections. Woooo.

I hope Obama takes Romney down.
