Feisty Cat Earns Its Keep by Fending Off Bears

9:49 pm - 04/25/2012

After the first viewing of this video, you might say, "Fucking right, cat who's probably named Marble Rye — show that bear the business." Then, after the second viewing, you might think that the cat's reaction seems a little extreme, considering how friendly a bear Winnie the Pooh was and the fact that this particular bear only seemed to seek friendship. After the thirty-seventh viewing, you'll be on your fifth jar of honey, working on your warranty-grabbing story to tell the Mac tech support people how exactly the honey got into the keyboard.

Saw this on my Facebook feed and thought everyone could use a laughs

Nah, black bears are really not big hunting carnivores. They eat mostly plant materials, with some fish and the occasional Apocrita nest thrown in (they LOVE honey).

Even brown bears are mostly herbivorous, though their diet is very opportunistic--brown bears in Yellowstone get up to 50% of their food intake from moths, for example, and Alaskan grizzlies eat enormous amounts of salmon.

What is up with all the stories about bears lately? So far there's the texting guy who nearly walked into a bear, the hiker who was saved from a cougar attack by a mama bear, the weatherman who had a bear walk up to him in the middle of a live report, and now this. HAS STEPHEN COLBERT BEEN ALERTED?

Bear saves hiker from cougar.

Tl;dr version: Hiker comes upon a mama bear with cubs, decides "maybe I'd better turn around," does so; cougar who has been secretly stalking cubs suddenly decides human is easier prey, attacks; Mama Bear swats cougar off hiker.

I don't know about all that, but there's been an increase in black bears rummaging for food all up and down the Appalachian Trail recently (the past few years). Like they've figured out in some spots that hanging food bags = delicious treats (and if they're poorly hanged, delicious treats that are easy to grab), and hanging food bags also = human presence. They wander into shelters sometimes to search for loose food. I think some areas are now even requiring bear canisters instead of hanging bags. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some connection between that sort of activity and this other stuff.
