BiNet USA Wins Over Google in Search Term Dispute

3:08 am - 09/10/2012
After a campaign by BiNet USA and bisexuals worldwide, Google has removed bisexual from its list of banned words.

BiNet USA is pleased to confirm that Google Inc. has unblocked the term bisexual from its search algorithm. Now that “bisexual” is allowed, terms such as bisexual quotes, bisexual rights, and bisexual parenting are automatically suggested to Google users.

“It’s not every day one of the biggest companies in the world changes its mind, but we are thankful that Google now sees bisexual people just like everyone else,” said BiNet USA President Faith Cheltenham. “It will take time for bisexual search terms to be ranked as they were before the ban, but now bisexual people and their allies have a fighting chance to be seen, heard, and understood.”

Since late 2009, Google has had “bisexual” on a list of banned words; such words were de-prioritized by the Google search algorithm, leading to a drop in search rankings for all bisexual organizations and community resources. Since its search engine would not auto-suggest or auto-complete any term with the word “bisexual”, Google made it harder for any user to find bisexual content, whether that be on coming out as bisexual or finding local support groups across the United States and elsewhere.

BiNet USA spearheaded a campaign to get Google to unblock the word and stop harming a deeply marginalized community even further.

first i'm hearing about this. what was the reason for the ban? are/were other words related to the LGBT+ community banned?
cozmic_oceanz 10th-Sep-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah, same here. What's the story??? And what does it mean exactly that it was banned? You couldn't google "bisexual" or the word bisexual just wouldn't come up on search results?

I was so disappointed when I heard about that, so I'm glad it's being fixed. I always feel uneasy letting others know I'm bisexual, especially since my fiance basically shouted me down on the issue. Little things like this mean a lot!

Why is he/she your fiance then? I'm curious. That would be it for me.

When I typed 'lesbian' into my search bar the first thing that popped up was 'lesbian facebook covers.' I died. XD And then started looking at lesbian Facebook covers. Then remembered that my cover photo is already of two queer women.

But I'm super glad that this was changed. I assume that unlike 'gay,' 'lesbian,' and 'transgender' 'bisexual' has the scary 'sex' work in it and oh no we can't auto-complete that.
bialogue 10th-Sep-2012 08:48 pm (UTC)
Nope! Lots and lots of "Blah, Blah, Blah SEX Blah, Blah" words were let thru, this was particularly aimed at "Bisexual" only
bonesnapdeez 10th-Sep-2012 07:00 pm (UTC)
So are "banned" words the ones that don't auto-fill when you're searching (I mainly use Ixquick for a search engine)?

I do know that you can't Google the names of porn stars... Someone told me that once.
andi1235 10th-Sep-2012 07:43 pm (UTC)
LOL, as far as I can tell you can totally Google the names of porn stars. I was trying to look up my younger brother once...turns out he shares a name with a porn star. Googling it certainly seemed to work okay in that respect...
dhamphir 10th-Sep-2012 08:14 pm (UTC)
It's only the auto-complete that was affected by the ban. If you typed the full word "bisexual" you would still get search results. The seach box just wouldn't auto-fill "bisexual" as you typed in the word. I never saw an effect on the search results before or after the ban. *shrug*

ETA: minor typo

not filling in with auto-complete seems small but signifiant--bizarre that this was ever the case
redstar826 10th-Sep-2012 08:46 pm (UTC)
huh, the auto complete still doesn't seem to be working, but all the hits on the first page seem relevant. While it seems stupid to not include the auto complete option I am confused as to how this made searching more difficult. But, I tend to ignore the auto complete stuff anyways.
layweed 10th-Sep-2012 09:01 pm (UTC)
Yarrr. I hate HATE HATE auto-complete. I turned it off when Google first rolled in the feature, and then they made it permanent and a feature and not an option. Ugh. I feel like it gives Google too much power in search terms, even though it doesn't really inhibit web searches. Plus it's annoying as all hell.

Idk, maybe I'm just getting cranky in my old age. I remember when Google was just a plain site with a search box and no gimmicky features.

First I've heard about this. WTF?

i'm glad there's an article being posted about this, and that google has (finally) stopped banning the autocomplete of bisexual and lesbian.

however i'm sorry to see you being the one to post it, seeing as i still remember that time you whined about lesbians and their patriarchal conspiracies. forgive me for bringing it up, but that stuff tends to stick in my totally irrational dyke mind.
